Geshem: Pray for Rain
Shemini Atzeret Festival worship focused on the "Geshem" prayer for rain. An interpretive English text found in Mishkan Tefilah is applied to a Ganchoff chazzanut setting for the prayer. Kedushah, by contrast, is set to the Beatles' "Rain." We may be individual raindrops, but drops of water are never alone. Like our prayers, those drops, together as one, become the rain and fall like blessings. |
A Broken Halleluyah
Famed Canadian poet, songwriter and author Leonard Cohen ws best known for his song, Hallelujah. His story, music and words were frequently drawn from by his personal experiences and infused with his Jewishness. Cohen's life and work were celebrated at a special Shabbat service accompanied by a talk given by the author of a biography of, "A Broken Hallelujah."

75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht
This Shabbat evening worship paid tribute to the vibrant German Jewish culture that existed prior to 1938. The service honored that community’s past, survival and renewal using the great liturgical music of German synagogue of composers such as Emil Dworzan (Laupheim), Julian Freudenthal (Brunschweig), Louis Lewandowski (Berlin), Samuel Lampel (Leipzig), Salomon Sulzer (Vienna) and Kurt Weill (Dessau). |

Backed by world music ensemble Lamajamal, led by oudist Ronnie Malley, Cantor Adam Davis leads a special musical Shabbat service highlighting melodies and maqams of Fez, Marrakesh, Casablanca, Tangier, Essouira, Rabat and the Atlas mountains to uncover the rich heritage of the Jews of the Maghreb.
